Utah Couple Surprises Pizza Delivery Man with $12,000 Tip

Utah resident Carlos Valdez and his wife are loyal customers at their local pizzeria who love their pineapple pizza and their local delivery man Derlin Newey.

Newey, at 89 years old is older than the average pizza delivery man, but is admired by the Valdezes for his positive upbeat attitude and signature catchphrase when delivering pizza, “Hello, are you looking for some pizza?”

Enthralled by Newey’s cheerful disposition, the Valdezes began filming Newey’s pizza deliveries and posting them on TikTok. Newey was a hit and soon he had nearly 53,000 followers.

As Newey’s popularity spread, concerns began to emerge about Newey’s need to work and spending so many hours on the job.  The Valdezes responded by reaching out to Newey’s fans.

Valdez told KLS, “Collectively as a TikTok community, we all came together, and we were able to raise $12,000 for this amazing person.”

The Valdezes surprised at his home with a t-shirt that read, ‘Hello, are you looking for some pizza?’ in one hand—and a check for $12,069 in the other.

Newey, a former ski champion, who had been working 30 hours a week to supplement his Social Security, overcome with emotion remarked, “How do I ever say thank you? I don’t know what to say.”

Remarking on the experience Carlos Valdez said, “This couldn’t have gone any better.”

“He needed this. I’m just glad we could help him. We just need to treat people with kindness and respect the way he does. He stole our hearts.”
