Teacher Prepares Lunch for His Student During UK Lockdowns

Teachers are always heroes, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created unique opportunities for heroes like Zane Powles to showcase his heroism.

Since the start of the pandemic, Powles has prepared 7,500 packed lunches for his students and delivered them to his students.  Concerned that some of his students might be struggling with food insecurity, each morning he prepared 85 lunches.

Walking roughly 7.5 miles each day to deliver the meals for 17 weeks, Powles fight against hunger has led him to walk more than 600 miles.  Powles described his experience as “well worth it.”

“When I started these walks I was concerned about the kids and their wellbeing and I wanted to make sure I could see them all,” said Zane, who works at Western primary school in the large coastal seaport of Grimsby. “I needed to know if they were safe, if they were healthy, and if they had access to food.”

Occasionally, while dropping off meals he would leave his student homework and encouraging messages to help them get through a tough time.
