Meet Truffles, the spunky cat that is helping youth with eye problems transition to wearing glasses.
Truffles, infamous for her stylish glasses ranging from sparkling purple to decadent green, assists her mom, Dr. Crull — a local optician and owner of A Child’s Eyes, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Specializing primarily in infants, toddlers and children in elementary school, Crull works to make the children feel comfortable when they visit her for appointments.
Like most people, the kids visiting Dr. Crull are terrified of anything coming near their eyes. That’s when Truffles comes to the rescue.
“She is literally magical with little kids,” Crull told CNN. “It takes me at least half an hour to try and get to know them so they realize I’m not something to be afraid of, and Truffles will come strutting out from the back as if she knows exactly when I need her help.”
Hopping up next to the children, Truffles knows the routine. She tilts her head and allows Dr. Crull to put on a pair of glasses. After seeing Truffles in her glasses, Crull said “The mood changes instantly.”
Tears become smiles, and glasses suddenly become less scary anymore.
“The story that happens over and over is a little one is crying and she comes out and I put glasses on her, and they immediately stop crying and laugh and put their own glasses on,” Crull said. “It happens countless times, and it’s just as sweet every single time.”
Wearing glasses is one of Truffles’ favorite things to do. She often falls asleep wearing them, Crull added. With more than 20 pairs of glasses to choose from, Truffles has plenty of spunk to show off to children to assist their transition to glasses.
