Kenyan Social Entrepreneur Turns Plastic Into Bricks

Kenya native, Nzambi Matee, launched a company manufacturing bricks from recycled plastics. Inspired by her treatment of being sidelined by civil servants within the Kenyan government while struggling to combat Nairobi’s plastic waste problems, she engineered bricks from plastic that are 5 to 7 times stronger than concrete.

Matee’s company, Gjenge Makers, transforms plastic waste into durable building materials. “There is waste they cannot process anymore; they cannot recycle. That is what we get,” Matee told Reuters.

So far, Matee employs more than 100 people and Gjenge Makers produces approximately 1,500 daily.
