Brothers Hike Across America to Support Restaurant Workers

The Ardine brothers began their walk across the United States on May 1, 2021 embarking from their hometown of Middletown, New Jersey. Once completed, the brothers will have walked a total of more than 3,000 miles hiking from New Jersey to California.

Funds raised during the brothers’ hike will go to the COCO Fund, a non-profit organization that provides direct financial assistance to individuals impacted by lost income due the pandemic, which temporarily closed restaurants, many of which still have not returned to their pre-pandemic levels.

Walking approximately 13-14 hours a day, the brothers have gone through more than 6 pairs of shoes between the two of them. Receiving both individual and corporate donations during a September visit while hiking through Reno, Nevada, Verizon announced it would be contributing $1,000 to support the brothers’ work.

The economies of major metropolitan hubs in Nevada like Reno and Las Vegas have been especially hard hit by the pandemic. In Las Vegas alone, 40% of all tourism revenue (the city’s largest industry) is associated with the restaurant industry. During the brief stop in Reno, the Ardines were met by both current and former restaurant workers who thanked them for efforts to raise awareness about their economic plight. The brothers might have begun their journey alone, but have since been joined by hundreds who are supporting them and following their progress on social media.
