Banking with an Ecological Conscious

In April, the American banking firm Aspiration began exploring the possibility of asking its customers to pay slightly more per transaction in exchange for helping to fund mass tree planting.

Within just 3 months of announcing the program, even with COVID-19 levels rising globally and the US economy in the midst of a major depression, customers enthusiastically embraced the program.  The result — the Aspiration has planted 1 million carbon capturing trees.

The program called “Plant Your Change” rounds the bank’s customers debit card transactions to the nearest dollar.  “Planting one million trees is a big achievement, but it is just the beginning,” said Andrei Cherny, Aspiration CEO and co-founder. “What we’ve seen during the COVID-19 crisis is that our customers want to do more, not less, to take action to save our planet.”

Aspiration’s commitment to the social well-being of its members extends beyond its “Plant Your Change” program to include incentives to its customers to support eco-friendly companies with 10% cash back rewards.

Committed to sustainable environmentally conscious outreach, Aspiration looks forward to planting more trees in the future and being an engaged corporate citizen working to combat climate change.
