7-year-old, Staten Island native Massiah Brown is no stranger to aquatic life. Exposed to water at a young age by his parents, Massiah developed a passion that led his parents to enroll him in swimming lessons.

A lover of all things aquatic, last week while in Sacramento visiting family, he and his peers were playing at the neighborhood pool when suddenly a 3-year-old toddler fell into the water.

“I was just playing in the pool and then I saw a boy at the bottom of the pool,” Massiah said, “and I went to go get him.”

Swimming over to the 6 feet section of the pool where the boy was, Massiah grabbed his arm and pulled him to the surface. Upon reaching the service, one of Massiah’s older cousins, 9-year-old Savannah, helped get them both to the ledge of the pool where they pulled themselves out.

Once adults arrived on the scene, 911 was contacted and the toddler was taken to the hospital.

“The child was transported in critical condition with advanced life support efforts provided by Sacramento firefighters,” a spokesperson for Sacramento Fire Department said.

Massiah’s father Marcus, an Olympic boxer who represented the United States at the 2012 Olympics in London, said he was not surprised by his son’s actions. Marcus said, “Massiah loves the water and swims like a fish.”

“He’s super empathetic so for him to do something like that, I mean, it’s really nothing out of the norm it’s just crazy that he’s 7-years-old and he’s doing something like that,” Marcus continued.

As of Saturday, July 30, 2022, the toddler has been released from the hospital and is in stable condition.
